Four years ago, the Subhashini Shivhare Foundation embarked on a unique mission to create opportunities for prison inmates through skill development and livelihood generation. What began as a small initiative with just 3,000 earthen lamps (diyas) crafted by inmates from Kanpur Jail, Mati Jail, Hamirpur Jail, and other correctional facilities has now evolved into a powerful movement of rehabilitation and empowerment.
This year, the initiative achieved a remarkable milestone by producing and distributing 30,000 handmade diyas, reflecting a tenfold increase in production and impact. Beyond the numbers, this growth represents renewed hope, restored dignity, and meaningful employment opportunities for hundreds of incarcerated individuals striving to rebuild their lives.
The program focuses on transforming correctional facilities into centers of learning and skill development. Inmates are trained in the production of a wide range of marketable products, enabling them to earn an income, develop confidence, and prepare for successful reintegration into society after release.
